papers, both objective in nature having multiple choice poll. First papers is General Studies-1
having 100 Questions which covers different dimensions of History, Art and Culture, Geography,
Indian Polity, Economy, Environment, Ecology, Science and Technology and current events of
national and international importance and has to be solved in 2 hours. The cut off of this paper
decides how many candidates will write the main examination. Whereas second paper is
compulsorily qualifying in nature where a candidate has to secure only 33%. This papers has 80

for preparing the merit list.
This stage has 2 qualifying papers first paper is English language and for the second paper, a
candidate has to take one language from 22 scheduled languages in the constitution. The
marks secured in qualifying papers is not included in merit. Both paper carries 300 marks
separately.

There is one essay paper along with 4 general studies paper and two papers of optional subject
taken by candidate.
Paper 1- Essay, 250 marks
Paper 2- General studies-1, this paper is based on Indian Heritage and Culture history and
geography of world and society and carries 250 marks.
Paper 3- General studies- 2, this paper is based on governance, constitution, polity, social
justice and international relations and carries 250 marks.
Paper 4- General studies-3, this paper is based on technology, economic development,

biodiversity, environment, security and disaster management and carries 250 marks.
Paper 5- General studies- 4, this paper is based on ethics integrity and aptitude and carried 250
marks.
Paper 6- Optional subject paper 1
Paper 7- Optional subject paper 2.
Both papers of optional subject carries 250 marks.
Subtotal- 1750 marks

After the mains exam candidates are shortlisted for stage III. the candidates shortlisted for
personality test are generally twice the number of vacancy which is to be filled.

Stage- 3  This stage is known as personality test where a candidate is called for interview in UPSC
building, New Delhi and carries 275 marks.
Total – 2025 marks
On the basis of marks obtained from total marks 2025 candidates are put it merit list to give
them rank, then service is allotted to candidates.
All the Question papers of this examination are printed in English and Hindi.
